Lockdown for all its disadvantages and sorrow has also been a source of new ideas and change for lots of artists. A lot of creativity has been inspired by lockdown themes. Artists have been drawing and painting the masked population exercising in the park; travelling on public transport; sitting two metres apart (hopefully) in cafes and bars; zooming their friends or colleagues to chat. Art classes have gone online. I was doing a course at City Lit on portrait and life drawing when the first lockdown was imposed. The course had to go online for just over a term and instead of drawing and painting from models we had to use stuff we had already done combined with any ideas or inspiration we could get from the environment at home. The results were really interesting. People were combining their art work with emotions and fantasies; expressing their feelings about the effects of the lockdown.
Now we’re in the second wave and online drawing courses have improved providing a huge choice of models, settings and camera views.
The images on this page are sketches and screen shots from some of the online art classes I attended.
